Liberty University has entered into a Consent Decree with the FCC, which includes the surrender of the license for the student-operated Christian radio station, WQLU/Lynchburg (90.9 The Light). As part of this agreement, Liberty University will also remit a $10,000 civil penalty to the FCC, resolving an investigation into violations related to the station’s operation beyond its authorized parameters and the provision of inaccurate information about the station’s activities to the FCC.

In the terms of the agreement, Liberty University acknowledges that WQLU had been operating outside of its licensed parameters for a period exceeding five years.

Initially licensed to operate from Candlers Mountain with 100 watts and 184 meters, WQLU had sought Special Temporary Authority (STA) to operate from Monogram Hill in 2011. Subsequently, the station ceased applying for STA renewals in 2015, resulting in the expiration of its approval in May 2015. In August 2020, WQLU once again requested an STA, seeking permission to operate from Monogram Hill. Following an inquiry by the FCC, it was revealed that the station’s licensed tower had been dismantled, and operations had resumed from a different tower on Candlers Mountain, contrary to the specifications in their license.
