WGTS Free Ice Cream Tour
WGTS/Wash DC served up free ice cream all around the Washington D.C. area all summer. “When we dreamed this up, we wanted a fun way to get into the diverse cities of all shapes and sizes to meet listeners. I figured everybody loves free ice-cream, so we teamed up with “Turkey Hill” dairy to take ice cream all over Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and it just seems to get bigger every year,” says WGTS Promotions Director Jerry Woods.
The ice cream tour heads to a different city every Friday. In just the first four Fridays the WGTS team has served ice cream to over 10,000 listeners. “Ice-cream tour is one of our favorite times of the year. It’s an opportunity to meet, to celebrate, to highlight and to serve our listeners, literally serve them ice cream,” says program director Brennan Wimbish. “We talk to the mayor of the city, feature amazing residents and talk about the historic landmarks and the little quirks that make each city unique, and we have a ton of fun to boot.” Johnny and Stacey Stone broadcast their afternoon show live from each event and the rest of the team serves up ice cream, plays games and hands out prizes to listeners. A large crew of volunteers also helps make sure the event has enough staff to run smoothly. The ice cream tour continues throughout July wrapping up in Tysons Corner, Virginia by serving ice
cream, collecting school supplies for charity and holding a free concert with Danny Gokey.
