TJ Jackson “Community Engagement Matters”
Radio is at its best when it’s more than something people listen to, it’s something they feel part of. The strongest stations don’t just build audiences; they build relationships. When listeners and communities are engaged, the station becomes a trusted companion rather than simply another media option.
If I could talk to managers I’d tell them why community engagement matters:
1. It builds trust.
People may enjoy a station because of its music or personalities, but they become loyal when they know the station genuinely cares about their community. Showing up at local events, supporting schools, celebrating local businesses, and helping during times of need demonstrates that commitment.
2. It creates emotional connection.
Listeners remember experiences more than advertisements. Meeting an on-air personality, participating in a community service project, or attending a station event creates memories that strengthen the relationship with the station.
3. This one’s big, It turns listeners into ambassadors
Engaged listeners naturally tell friends, share social media posts, volunteer at events, and invite others to participate. Word-of-mouth remains one of the most powerful forms of marketing.
4. It makes radio local.
Streaming services can play music. Podcasts can entertain. But only local radio can celebrate a hometown football championship, organize a school supply drive, or rally a community during a crisis. Local engagement is one of radio’s greatest competitive advantages.
5. It encourages listener participation.
When listeners know their voices matter, they’re more likely to call, text, comment on social media, attend events, and contribute ideas. Engagement becomes a two-way conversation instead of a one-way broadcast.
A helpful way to think about engagement is: People support what they help build. When listeners help choose event locations, volunteer at outreach projects, nominate local heroes, or contribute to community initiatives, they develop a sense of ownership in the station.
When a station consistently lives that message, it moves from being a preset on the dashboard to becoming a trusted part of people’s everyday lives.
