John Scaggs Gutenberg Winner
WAY-FM President John Scaggs named 2019 Gutenberg Award Winner by Abilene Christian University
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Abilene Christian University has named WAY Media President & CEO, and distinguished alum, John Scaggs (’90) the recipient of the 2019 Gutenberg Award. Joining Scaggs as honorees at the October 17th ceremony will be April Ward Farris (’06), Appellate Partner, Yetter Coleman LLP, Houston and Michael Hagerty (’01), Senior Producer of Houston Matters, Houston Public Media, Houston.
Introduced in 1993, The Gutenberg Award recognizes distinguished professional achievements of ACU’s Journalism and Mass Communication Department alumni. Scaggs joins a list of notable past recipients from the Christian radio and music industry including Mike Blanton (’86), owner of Reunion Records; Jason McArthur (’96), VP, A&R, SONY Music, Provident Label; Brown Bannister (’75) Music Producer; Max Lucado (’87) Minister and Author and Grant Rampy (’00) Correspondent, Tribune Broadcasting.
Commenting on this honor, Scaggs stated, “When I was a student at ACU, I attended the award ceremonies and heard recipients share and inspire from their field about art, truth, beauty they are part. “I did not see myself in their company. “I’ve visited the offices and homes of fellow alums and looked at the Gutenberg scale model replica and was impressed at how Dr. Marler crafts each one. Scaggs continued, “I recalled interacting with the honorees during my student-years and feeling the anxiety of not knowing how upon graduation I would find a career. “I look forward to now doing the same for students that are full of wonder, talent and dreams.”
Scaggs has been in his current position since 2017 and a member of the WAY-FM board of directors for 18 years. Before that he was Director of Broadcast Solutions at Harmonic, Inc. for 5 years and Director of Sales at Wegener for 11 years. He also was VP/ Engineering at Salem Radio Networks, Director of New Business at Video Communications, Inc. and Business Development Manager at WideOrbit
