Several Christian Radio stations in the United States are challenging the disproportionately higher streaming costs they face compared to non-religious stations. This lawsuit alleges discriminatory royalty rates, with Rory Gray from the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) underscoring the disparity. Gray stated, “The government is charging religious broadcasters a significantly higher rate… It suppresses religious speech in the public sphere.”

The issue originated from unsuccessful negotiations with SoundExchange in 2016, culminating in increased streaming expenses for religious radio following a 2021 ruling by the US Copyright Royalty Board (CRB). Gray highlighted that noncommercial religious broadcasters are now subject to rates equivalent to commercial levels, underscoring the contrast with the rates afforded to secular NPR stations.

Former WFFH/Nashville PD Jayme Summers tells HisAir her new title is Program Director for Today’s Christian music and Today’s Worship Music.

Jayme says, “It has been an honor to serve The Fish Nashville for the last 7 years. I have learned more under this roof than I have in the 18 years prior serving for Salem. While it breaks my heart to know there is no longer a local Christian station for my friends and neighbors, I am excited for our new national brand we have launched. Look for a press release soon about TheFish.Com.”

This week, the Gospel Music Association (GMA) spearheaded the official groundbreaking ceremony for the forthcoming Christian & Gospel Music Museum at The Dove Center. Situated at 400 Commerce Street in downtown Nashville, the museum’s location promises to be a focal point for celebrating the rich heritage of Christian and Gospel music. Notable attendees at the event included Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, both expressing their enthusiastic support for this momentous occasion. The ceremony was further enhanced by special musical performances from acclaimed artists such as Dove Award and GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Michael W. Smith and Dove Award-winning artist Jekalyn Carr.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to break ground on the new home for Christian & Gospel music right in the heart of Music City,” said Jackie Patillo, GMA President. “The opportunity to be a beacon of light here in Nashville and offer a place to fulfill our mission to expose, promote, and celebrate the Gospel is a big step forward.”
