Several radio groups are supporting a proposal to increase the power of FM stations using HD Radio technology. The National Association of Broadcasters and Xperi have asked the FCC to re-evaluate the level of protection required for analog stations. They argue that the current formula overestimates the potential for digital interference and has prevented stations from increasing power, hindering the growth of digital radio.
Glynn Walden, chief engineer at CBS Radio and co-founder of iBiquity (predecessor of Xperi), agrees that the current limits for In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) technology were proposed with caution when it was first rolled out 20 years ago. Walden states that digital coverage was less than expected and adjacent channel interference was not an issue. He believes that the NAB-Xperi proposal would allow more stations to better serve listeners by being less conservative in their approach to digital power.
