Searching for New Opportunities & Trusting God: Navigating Change in Christian Broadcasting
Author: Brian Curee, Founder of KillerB Digital
The latest industry news has many people on edge. With Salem Media shutting down its music stations and CMB’s Momentum 2025 theme being “RISK,” it feels like we’re standing at a crossroads. I get it, “risk” sounds scary, especially with the media landscape being so unpredictable. But, as Christians, we’re called to look at risk differently, with faith at the center.
Faith & Risk Go Hand in Hand
Taking risks is just part of being a Christian. Having faith means taking risks and trusting God without knowing all the details. Back in 2019, before the pandemic, I had to make a career decision. I had a full-time job as the Digital Content & Marketing Director at WAKW, which I loved. It gave me a steady paycheck and security. But after praying for months along with my wife, I felt God was calling me to leave that safety and run KillerB Digital (formerly Killer Bee Marketing) full-time and help more stations and businesses with their digital strategies and presence. One of my friends at the station asked, “How can you do it? How can you leave a job with a guaranteed paycheck for something uncertain?”
To answer that question, I had to think back to 2010. It was my first genuine attempt at solopreneurship, but I didn’t exactly choose it…I was forced into it. I lost my job because of the economic crash. I was scared, and no one was hiring. Driving home, I prayed, and God told me, “I’m going to teach you how to trust Me.” I immediately responded, “I trust You!” Later, I learned I trusted the chair I was sitting in more than God. He wanted me to trust Him completely, the same way I’d trust any random chair to hold me.
For six years, I learned how to trust Him, and my faith grew. I would say it’s one of the best gifts God has blessed my family with. So, when it was time to leave WAKW, I told my friend, “I’m excited because I’ve been there before, and I’m nervous because I’ve been there before.” It’s been over five years since I took that leap of faith, and God has been there for me every step of the way. I pray that each of you facing this season will keep the faith in knowing that God is with you every step of the way. 🙏
What Does Risk Mean?
Recent changes, like Salem Media closing down its music stations, have left many amazing and skilled people jobless. It’s tough when something you’ve dedicated your life to disappears. But this could also be a chance to reinvent yourself and find new ways to use your talents. Maybe God has something bigger in store for you beyond traditional radio or maybe you’ll take a job at another station. With the increase of AI, more of us will need to reinvent ourselves as these technologies evolve. We can choose to see these changes as either threats or opportunities. I encourage us all to look for new opportunities.
Not many people know this, but when I left my job at WAKW, CMB asked me to lead my first breakout session at Momentum. I was super excited about the opportunity, and after leaving the station, I saw this event as the perfect launching platform. But halfway to Florida, I got a phone call from Michelle, and the conference was canceled due to a hurricane that was expected to hit. My wife watched as my excitement turned into disbelief and disappointment. I’m so thankful for what she said to me next. She told me it was okay to be sad, to mourn the lost opportunity but that I couldn’t stay there. Absorb this blessing.
During that season, I was learning a new thing from God via something I heard Brant Hansen talk about: “absorb this blessing.” These blessings didn’t always feel and look like blessings, but I had to learn to absorb all the stuff coming my way and trust that God knew exactly what He was doing. The blessing I took away from that moment was that it wasn’t a single organization or person who was going to make KillerB Digital succeed; it was God. He would open and close doors.
3 Ideas for Creative Outlets for Broadcasters During Uncertain Times
Below are three creative outlets that broadcasters may want to consider. Don’t give up and don’t lose hope! There are opportunities out there, and I hope these ideas will help kickstart the thought process.
1. Content Creator or Podcast Consultant
Your broadcasting experience can be helpful in today’s growing podcast world, but starting your own podcast isn’t the only option. Many businesses and organizations now see the power of podcasts but often struggle with content strategy, production, and keeping the audience interested. This is where your skills can come in handy.
Offering consulting or production services can help others create awesome podcasts, manage content, and improve storytelling. But it’s important to remember that podcasting and radio have key differences. Below is a quick comparison chart that shows some ways they’re different.
Podcasting vs. Radio: Quick Comparison
| Aspect | Radio | Podcasting |
| Content Style | Structured with time blocks (e.g., segments, music, commercials) | Flexible format with full creative control |
| Audience Reach | Local or regional, often limited to a broadcast radius | Global reach, accessible anytime via streaming platforms |
| Monetization | Ad revenue from sponsors, often sold by sales teams | Monetization can include lead generation, sponsorships, listener support (Patreon), subscriptions, etc. |
| Content Delivery | Live and immediate | Pre-recorded (video or audio), allowing editing and on-demand access or livestream. |
| Audience Interaction | Often through live calls, social events. | Social media, reviews, direct listener feedback through text messaging or live calls. |
These differences show us where we can find opportunities and challenges. By understanding the specifics of podcasting, you can help clients create meaningful, audience-driven content that matches their goals.
Opportunities:
- Offer services like content strategy, audio production, and audience engagement consulting.
- Help local businesses or nonprofits start and improve their podcasts.
2. Influencer
Your voice has earned you trust over the years, and switching jobs doesn’t erase that influence. You can make a difference through personal branding, social media, and partnerships. Build relationships with your community by sharing stories, causes, and content that match your values.
Opportunities:
- Team up with brands and organizations to promote initiatives that match your values and mission.
- Use platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn to share helpful tips, inspiring messages, and behind-the-scenes.
3. Voiceover Talent or Audio Specialist
Your time behind the mic has given you voice work and audio production skills. From corporate videos to audiobooks and digital ads, people are looking for professional voiceovers. Plus, you can help businesses, churches, and organizations level up their audio content.
Opportunities:
- Get paid to narrate corporate videos, ads, audiobooks, and online courses.
- Become an audio consultant to help others sound better, edit their work, and tell better stories.
Moving Forward with Faith & Confidence
I want to be sensitive because losing a job is not easy. Still, it may also be a divine opportunity to step into something greater. Taking risks can be scary, but it can help you grow, strengthen your beliefs, and lead to change you’d never imagined. This is an opportunity to put your faith in God and try something new. The skills and creativity that brought you success in broadcasting can be used in new and exciting ways. You can create content, influence people, and spread the truth in ways you never thought possible. I’ve been sharing the truth in the Metaverse for the past three years, so I encourage you to think outside the box and not limit yourself to how you’ve always done things. As technology and seasons change, we must be open to changing our methods without losing sight of our purpose.
So, ask yourself, “What risk is God nudging me towards today?” Let’s keep moving forward with faith, trusting that He’ll provide for us, guide us, and be there for us every step of the way.
