NAGR Southern Summit Held in Houston

The National Association of Gospel Radio (NAGR) held its Southern Region Summit in Houston April 19-20. HisAir was honored to be attendance with about 50 others at VGN Studios in Houston as NAGR launched another phase of its mission to preserve, protect, and advance the gospel radio format.

The summit featured breakout sessions, networking opportunities guest speakers, and more. NAGR National President Charles Edward Johnson and Southern Region Co-Chairs, Greg ‘Uncle G’ Lyons and Mike Chandlers were in attendance.

NAGR 2nd Vice President Fred Harris told HisAir, “The first of 4 regional summits was a powerful day of bringing relevant resources to the table while ensuring the region was left with outstanding leadership to continue the work. Co-chairs Mike Chandler & Greg Lions (Uncle G) became the official leaders of the charter. Installed by President Charles Johnson and the board of the National Association Of Gospel Radio. Nicole Bishop Fred Harris, 2nd Vice President, and Nicole Heyward, Coordinator, also serve as Southern Region leaders.”

One of the speakers Friday morning was former Radio One/Houston PD Terri Thomas (pictured).

Thomas spoke on air personalities “branding” themselves and being vulnerable to AI and social media influencers outside of radio.

She stressed radio talent to KNOW -who you are, what you do, and why it matters in becoming a valuable brand.

Regarding the Houston Summit NAGR President Charles Edward Johnson had this to say, “Our inaugural regional summit in the South, held in Houston, TX, was a tremendous success! Attendees left with valuable insights on how to enhance their roles as gospel radio professionals and were motivated to elevate their stations for both listeners and advertisers.”

NAGR Convention Administrator Ron Briggs tells HisAir, “Advancing gospel radio isn’t just about moving forward; it’s about carrying the timeless message of hope and faith into new territories, reaching hearts and souls with each beat and melody. Our regional summits are catalysts to that end leading up to our National Convention!”

Also at the summit Rejoice Musical SoulFood Network CEO Mike Chandlers shared about trusting one another for growth helping each other to achieve. 

On Friday evening artists Titus Showers, Kathy Taylor Anthony Hall and others performed for the attendees.

The National Association of Gospel Radio (NAGR) was formed in Jan 2023 to be an important trade association for professionals working in the gospel inspirational format. The group is committed to furthering the association’s mission of empowering gospel radio stations to preserve, protect, and advance the format.

The NAGR has more Regional summits scheduled leading up to their national convention May 28-31 in Memphis.

Midwest Regional May 17-18 Cincinnati
Eastern Regional June 21-22 Norfolk
West Regional July 18 Las Vegas
