Salem Media Group CEO David Santrella was honored with the 2024 National Radio Award. Santrella, who chaired the NAB Joint Board of Directors from June 2021 to June 2023, received this prestigious accolade during the Marconi Radio Awards at the 2024 NAB Show New York.
“NAB is extremely pleased to recognize Dave for his exceptional contributions to the radio industry,” said NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “On National Radio Day, it’s especially fitting to recognize a leader whose belief in radio’s unique ability to serve the public is second to none. Dave’s public service ethos, along with a keen business acumen and authentic leadership style have strengthened the entire radio ecosystem, making him a most deserving recipient of this year’s National Radio Award.”
Dave Santrella has been a pivotal figure in the radio industry for nearly 40 years. Since becoming CEO of Salem Media Group in January 2022, he has led the company through significant growth, particularly in its digital platforms. Under his leadership, Salem has launched the successful Salem Surround, Salem Podcast Network, SalemNOW and Salem News Channel, establishing the company as a leader across 30 markets.
Santrella’s career began in Chicago, where he worked with NBC’s WMAQ and CBS’s WBBM before joining Salem in 2001. He quickly ascended through the ranks, taking on roles of increasing responsibility, including operations vice president, president of Salem’s Radio division, and eventually president of Broadcast Media. Beyond Salem, Santrella has been an influential voice within the industry, serving as NAB Joint Board Chair and on the board of the NAB Leadership Foundation, among other roles. He has been recognized in Radio Ink’s “The 40 Most Powerful People in Radio” for the past four consecutive years.
WORQ/Green Bay (Q90 FM) listeners came together in an incredible show of support and compassion for those affected by the recent hurricane. Starting promptly at 7 AM, people began bringing donations for hurricane relief. As the Karl’s Transport semi rolled in, it marked the beginning of what would become a massive collaborative effort to provide aid to those in need.
WORQ’s Katie Connell tells HisAir, “By 10 AM, the volume of donations made it clear that we would need a second semi to accommodate the generous outpouring of support. As the clock struck noon, it was evident that a third semi was necessary, and we still had our sights set on reaching the Appleton Festival Foods for even more donations. What truly stood out that day was the spirit of our volunteers. Many of them, who initially came to donate, chose to stay and help load the donations when they noticed the police officers struggling to keep up with the influx. Their selflessness and determination were nothing short of inspiring.”
Meanwhile, Katie and other volunteers made their way to Festival Foods, where we called in a fourth semi. Within just an hour, we realized that another semi was needed there as well. Throughout the day, there was no shortage of donations; the community’s response was overwhelming. By Friday evening around 8 PM, we had dispatched a total of nine semis to Karl’s Transport. Our dedicated staff and volunteers worked tirelessly all weekend, unloading and reloading each semi to ensure everything was prepared for the convoy heading to North Carolina. After meticulous planning for weight distribution, we were able to finalize ten semi loads of donations.
Thanks to WORQ listeners a convoy of nine semis loaded with donations is expected to arrive in Asheville, NC on Tuesday.
