Regarding todays decision by The US Supreme Court consultant John Frost offers this to stations:

How do we talk about it?

Today is an historic day.  It also creates a significant challenge for our stations knowing that we have listeners on every side of the Supreme Court ruling.

I posed this question to my friend Brant Hansen, who is one of the best in finding unique camera angles on topics, while still being grounded on the principles that guide our mission.

How do we talk about today’s ruling without destroying the common ground we’ve worked so hard to create?   How do we unite believers rather than divide?

Here are some of his thoughts.

Were I prepping a show today, here are four quick ideas I would likely run with… off the top of my head, and hastily typed:

1.
Given the latest news and reactions, we’re reminded to be thankful. Thank you, ministries who surround and support pregnant women in crisis.

Thank you, churches and believers who help provide for the needs of the poor and the vulnerable.

Thank you, foster parents.

Thank you to those who pray for our nation, including their enemies.

Thank you to everyone who puts the love of God in action.

2.
When you look on social media and it feels like everything and everyone is coming apart at the seams… we have to remind ourselves of what’s true. Deeply true. In the Old Testament, Jeremiah was alarmed, depressed, and anxious about what was happening to his nation. But in the midst of it, he reminded himself like this:

“But I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases!

His mercies never come to an end.

They are new every morning.

Great is thy faithfulness!

‘THE LORD is my portion!’ says my soul.

Therefore I will hope in HIM!”

3.
It seems like there’s a huge news story every single day. And we know this: Whatever the political views of our neighbors… they’re anxious. People need non-anxious voices in their lives. They need to see people at peace, people who aren’t driven by anger or worry.

This is our role, and your role, too.

4.
When people I disagree with make social media statements, I rarely feel like my point of view is actually, genuinely understood. Or my motives. Maybe you feel this way, too. It’s frustrating.
Then I remember how misunderstood Jesus was. Even by his own guys, his own inner circle. And certainly his enemies who mocked him.
And I remember that he prayed for them, “Forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.”
