WKNZ On-Air Communion

WKNZ/Milford (The Bridge) connected thousands of believers across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia Monday afternoon (June 22, 2020) with its first ever broadcast communion service.  Recognizing that Christians haven’t gathered in church buildings for almost 14 weeks, The Bridge invited listeners to gather with friends and family as two local pastors joined Afternoon Show host Mark Dickey in the studio.

Pastor Ryan Coon of Calvary Church in Dover, DE explained the purpose of holy communion and led listeners in a prayer of repentance in preparation of receiving the elements, and Pastor Tim Banks of The Life Center in Greenwood, DE read the scriptural account of the first communion and led listeners in the partaking of bread and wine.

Station Manager Bill Sammons says the idea originated from the weekly devotions at a Bridge staff meeting when announcer Mark Dickey suggested the team receive communion together since churches have been closed because of the pandemic.  After consulting with several pastors regarding the feasibility and doctrine surrounding communion, The Bridge served as the connecting voice of the community.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for us to advance our mission, which is to connect and strengthen”, Sammons said.  “We also saw it as a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel on the radio, and to invite listeners to begin or rekindle a relationship with Jesus.”

The Bridge is a non-profit, community-supported radio station that plays a mix of Adult Contemporary Christian Music, with an emphasis on local people, local issues, and local events. On-air hosts are always entertaining for listeners of every age category, and encourage unity amongst Delmarva’s population. The station is a source of strength to assist the listener’s daily walk with the Lord.
