WBGL/Champaign
celebrated Life during its spring fundraiser and focused on raising
funds for Life FM, one of the first Christian stations in Cork, Ireland.
Over $500,000 was pledged in total, which allowed WBGL to meet its
operational goal and add an additional 10 percent to its building
campaign. For each pledge made during the fundraiser, WBGL donated
$2 to Life FM. HCJB Global then matched the donations, doubling the
effort to help “Shine the Light over Cork”. WBGL donations came in at
$5,629, bringing in a total of over $11,000 after HCJB’s contribution.
This is the first time WBGL partnered with HCJB Global. WBGL Station
Manager, Jeff Scott explained the reason for the partnership, "I felt
like it was time to stretch our faith. If we truly believe God is
leading this ministry, He alone can do exceedingly, abundantly more than
we could ever imagine. That He did!" Even in uncertain times, listeners
responded and were eager to give to further the kingdom of God in
Ireland. WBGL is looking forward to future partnerships with HCJB

KSBJ/Houston’s
popular show Enter His Gates recently celebrated its 10th
anniversary on the air. Enter His Gates first hit the airwaves on
Sunday, March 14, 1999 with President and General Manager Tim McDermott
hosting the program. “They say that the church is the most divided on
Sunday mornings as people from different cultures, denominations and
backgrounds worship separately,” says Tim McDermott, President and
General Manager for KSBJ. “The vision of Enter His Gates was and still
is to bring the church together as one. And, by the response we’ve
received, we’re doing just that! We also want to help prepare people for
worship and bring some peace to their home for what can be a hectic
Sunday morning.” (6/12)

WAFJ/Augusta
is offering listeners a job board on the station’s website. John Bryant,
co-host of “John and Cleve in the Morning”, says he started the
board after hearing about a similar offering in Louisville, Ky. “We were
hearing all of the gloomy stats about unemployment and wanted to do
something to provide hope to those who are without jobs,’ Bryant said.
“It has been available for 5 months and the reaction has been
phenomenal.” Bryant said visitors to the station’s website can browse
the listings for free, and employers are encouraged to submit jobs to be
posted free of charge. Listings are occasionally featured on the air
during the morning show. “We believe that, as a Christian radio
station, our audience is full of good people with great values,” Bryant
said. “The employers tell me they like knowing that because it gives
them a quality pool of applicants.” (6/11)

UPDATE:
Currently EMF is studying whether to convert WQFL/Rockford and
WGSL/Rockford to to its K-LOVE
and/or Air 1 formats, keep
them as they are, or make some kind of blend. The decision is said to
come in the next two months. “It depends on what the community wants,
what it needs, how well the station is doing,” EMF President/CEO Mike
Novak said. “If the station is really doing very well, we come alongside
them and provide the knowledge that we have in our ministry to sort of
raise the bar.” EMF purchased the Rockford pair last month from local
church Rockford First who had owned the two for more than two decades.
The stations’ 15 employees will be asked to reapply for their jobs once
EMF decides on formats and staffing. (6/5)

We are all in total
shock to hear that
Radio and Records
is closing it's doors for good this Friday. But after 36 years the radio
trade publication will cease operations, being shut down by parent
company Nielsen Business Media. The R&R website has already been taken
down. While R&R did cover the Christian radio format if only on a
limited capacity, to us who've been in radio for at least 30 years it
seems there has always been R&R. I never thought I'd see the day that
the "industry newspaper" was no more, but times have changed. At one
time R&R employed about 100 people, today about 40 were let go today.
According to the story on the R&R website just
before it was taken down, "The current state of affairs has left The
Nielsen Company with no other alternative but to immediately cease all
services, products and events related to Radio & Records. The magazine’s
final edition is the June 5 issue. Electronic products end today, the
Web site will be taken offline soon."
R&R Founder Bob Wilson said today, "It's a sad day
and the industry has changed. It was, at one time the information leader
in the industry, and when we started it 1973, it was revolutionary for
its time."
We'll miss Radio and Records dearly and I am
grateful for the contribution the organization has made to the radio
industry as a whole. (6/3)

Christian Family Radio, based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, an
inter-denominational Christian radio station is expected to hit the air
in a few weeks. The station will carry programs such as Insight for
Living with Chuck Swindoll, Focus on the Family with James Dobson and
children’s programs like Adventures in Odyssey. “We are at the moment
just waiting for the cement to harden,” said pastor Charles Aguilar. The
relay tower was expected to be up after the cement hardened on church
grounds last Friday and a test run done this week, he said.
The hope is that the station, VOAR, which is
the oldest Christian radio station in Canada and the country’s largest
Christian radio network, will go live in three weeks, he added. The
vision to have a Christian/family-friendly radio station here has been
around for more than a couple of years and belongs to Steve McPherson,
who worked on the applications, said Aguilar. Programming also includes
a variety of music, from hymns to contemporary praise and worship to
country gospel to instrumental, and programs specifically for women,

McPherson’s vision is to have a high-powered

Despite
pleas from local radio stations, listeners, and civil rights
leaders, the House Judiciary Committee today passed a bill by
a vote of 21 to 9 that would levy a new fee on local radio stations
for music aired free to listeners. If enacted, 50 percent of the new
fee would go directly into the coffers of the major record label
companies, three out of four of which reside outside the United
States. Outside the Judiciary Committee, a bipartisan group of
192 House lawmakers are already on record in opposition to the
legislation, which is being pushed by the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA).
NAB Executive Vice
President Dennis Wharton issued the following statement:
"We were pleasantly
surprised by the considerable bipartisan opposition to a performance
tax, even in a committee where support for the record labels is
strongest. NAB applauds these nine members for standing with America's
hometown radio stations, their 235 million weekly listeners, and the
yet-to-break artists who will lose their number one promotional platform
if this bill is enacted.
"Nearly half the
House of Representatives already opposes RIAA efforts to feather the
nest of foreign record labels. Record label abuse of artists from Count
Basie to Prince is well-documented, as evidenced by scores of lawsuits
filed by musicians cheated out of royalties. Moving forward, the
fundamental question is this: If the debate is about 'fairness to
artists', why should the record labels get one penny from a performance
tax on radio stations?"
"Congress should not
impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating
to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station
for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for
such public performance of sound recordings," reads The Local Radio
Freedom Act. (5/13)

current role during a transition phase. During an interim period, Janet
McGregor, NAB's chief operating and financial officer, will work closely
with Rehr and assume day-to-day duties until a successor is named. Rehr
joined the NAB in 2005.
Rehr's sudden resignation comes less
than three weeks after the NAB held its major event of the year, the
annual spring convention in Las Vegas, which in good times, generates
nearly $50 million in revenue for NAB. This year's attendance was
dramatically lower than in previous years, just under 84,000, the
decline blamed on the recession. However, under Rehr's leadership, the
NAB has lost several significant battles, the most obvious the group's
expensive attempt to stop the Sirius-XM merger. Both the Department of
Justice, and then the FCC, approved the merger with inconsequential
stipulations. (5/6)

Hauth of Salem Communications; Harv Hendrickson of Northwestern Media, a
ministry of Northwestern College; Don Crawford of Crawford Broadcasting;
and Dan DeBruler of Christian Listening Network have joined together to
oppose H.R. 848 and S. 379, the performance tax legislation being
pushed by foreign-owned record labels.
In a letter to members of Congress, they wrote, “Radio companies like
ours that air ministry programming are trying to weather the economic
storm ahead, but some members of Congress — at the urging of the
foreign-owned record labels — have introduced legislation that could
make it impossible for radio ministries to survive … Even if the
legislation included exemptions that actually meant something, we would
oppose this measure on principle.”
They added, “Why would we legislatively and financially reward an
industry that consistently displays bad behavior at the expense of local
jobs and local communities? Local religious radio stations like ours
exist to help people. And the entire radio industry is formed around the
notion that it has the responsibility to not only entertain and inform,
but also to serve the great people in this country. We take pride in
doing that every day, and it is why we need your help.” (5/4)

 Dial
Global has teamed up with Christian FM Networks for the Christian
FM 24-hour Contemporary Christian Music format for network radio.
Already on board are KKSP/Little Rock and WSCF/Vero Beach. Like Dial
Global Local’s other branded formats, Christian FM uses the proprietary
STORQ hardware/software platform. STORQ allows affiliates to receive up
to five custom local breaks per hour in real time in their network feed,
with local content going to network announcers through a web interface.
Christian FM Networks President Jon Hamilton commented, “We are
delighted to work with the industry leader Dial Global on this new
format, which will allow local Christian stations to maintain a strong
local identity while providing a top quality sound. This agreement will
bring important new technology to Christian broadcasting and allow the
CCM format to continue its explosive growth.”
Dial Global President/Programming Kirk
Stirland added, "Jon and his team at Christian FM are uniquely qualified
to bring this format to life nationally, and our STORQ platform is ideal
for this application." The
Florida based Christian FM Networks
has operated CCM formatted stations for 20 years. The agreement reached
today with Dial Global provides Christian FM Networks with exclusive
access to Dial Global technology and delivery systems. Dial Global is
radio's largest full-service, independent radio network, providing
national advertising sales representation to over 200 radio programs and
networks in addition to Dial Global's own programming and services.
Including the Jones Digital Formats and the Dial Global Digital 24/7
Network, Dial Global Programming now produces and syndicates
approximately 100 music programs and prep services in a variety of
formats to more than 6,000 radio stations nationwide. The Christian FM
format will be made available by Christian FM Networks to commercial and
non-commercial stations for fees, barter or both.

 The
FCC has issued a $20,000 notice of apparent liability to Power Radio
Corp., licensee of KXPW-LP/Georgetown, TX, (Power FM 106.7)
saying the station "willfully and repeatedly broadcast prohibited
advertisements." The FCC received a complaint in 2003 that KXPW
was broadcasting prohibited underwriting announcements, and sent an
inquiry to Power Radio. It then received further allegations that the
station had aired underwriting announcements in 2004.
PRC admitted that it aired the
announcements in question many times in 2003 and 2004, and said it tried
to revise them to meet FCC guidelines. Now the FCC says it has reviewed
the record and that the announcements, made on behalf of for-profit
entities "apparently exceed what is permissible" under the law.

 Global
Food Crisis Awareness Day raised
$3.1 million from donations of 27,000 listeners from over 1000 Christian
radio stations that participated.
Some highlights of the day include the following:
-
KLOVE and Air 1
networks devoted their entire broadcast days to address the global
food crisis and their listeners responded in huge numbers with an
average one-time donation of over $100 per giver.
-
An Air 1 listener
going through tough times called his local Christian station and
shared that he is on food stamps and through tears talked about how
hearing what millions of hungry people are going through has opened
his eyes to how much he has. He said he just got a twenty-five dollar
raise at his job and pledged to donate thirteen dollars of that to
help feed a child.
-
A KLOVE listener from
Missouri called to say she wanted to share a portion of a settlement
she received and believed God would have her give $60,000 to help the
kids affected by the Global Food Crisis.
-
A deli owner called
his local station and said that he would donate 100% of all cash
profits on this day.
-
People stuck in NYC
traffic with Blackberrys® called Star 99.1 (WAWZ) and logged on to the
station's website to find out information about how they could help.
-
A listener took up a
collection in her department at work and raised seventy dollars for
the Global Food Crisis fund.
"The way in which these
Christian radio stations and their supporters have answered the call to
care for the poor is overwhelming," said Wess Stafford, president and
CEO of Compassion International.
"They have demonstrated the true meaning of the word ‘compassion.’"
"All of us at STAR 99.1
are exhilarated at the results of the Global Food Crisis campaign,"
said Johnny Stone, program director and morning show host at WAWZ Star
99.1, which covers New York City and New Jersey markets.
"This proves if we pray hard and work hard, we can make a difference."
"The Global Food Crisis
Day was a huge success! It was a gift to hear about the amazing reach
and impact that Compassion International is having,"
said Frank Pastore, host of The Frank Pastore Show on 99.5 KKLA FM in
Los Angeles.
"We are blessed to partner with them in sharing the love of Christ."

KKCM/Tulsa
(Spirit 102.3) flipped formats today as Cox Radio pulled the plug on
CCM. They have decided on a 24 hour
simulcast of sister station KRMG/Tulsa, a talk station.
Cox Radio,
Tulsa VP/Market Manager Dan Lawrie released this statement, "First, I
want to thank our loyal listeners for their support of the station over
the past three years. We have enjoyed serving the Tulsa community with
Spirit 102.3 FM. In just three years, Spirit 102.3 attracted a sizable
listening audience. The popularity of Spirit 102.3 even surprised many
executives in the radio industry, as this was the first contemporary
Christian radio station operated by Cox Radio.
As we've
evaluated the challenges of the current economy, we've made some
difficult choices with regard to finding the best way to run our
business operations while still meeting the needs of our listening
audience. While the format was popular on the radio, the changes in the
economy are forcing us, like so many other companies, to explore new
ways of meeting the needs of this community while maintaining a focus on
solid business operations. The decision to simulcast our 24-hour
news/talk format will offer valuable news and talk radio content to a
wider listening audience, while affording us the opportunity to continue
our role as a local employer and a strong community leader.
KKCM will
continue as an online station only at www.spirit1023.com. No word on
the fate of the KKCM staff. (3/16)

have never seen the potential for devastation that I see in the current
Global Food Crisis." WAWZ/New York (Star 99.1) PD and

 Christian
radio industry veterans Joe Battaglia, President of Renaissance
Communications, and John Frost, a partner in Goodratings Strategic
Services, announce the formation of a new, jointly owned company
Battaglia-Frost Creative Productions, Inc. According to a
joint statement by Battaglia and Frost, the new entity exists to introduce a new
wave of great communicators to Christian radio, and create compelling
programming elements and shows that are a level above what individual
stations could do on their own.
On the reason for starting
a new company, Battaglia stated, “I have been concerned for some time
now about how few great communicators are intentionally seeking out a
presence on Christian radio. John and I believe we can provide the right
context and information to interest these individuals in that platform,
and thereby reach the greatest radio audience in the world! But, we
have to do that by stripping away misinformation, and educate them about
the new Christian radio listener and our great stations, many of which
are now market share leaders. So, we want to reach out and address these
concerns via our new company.”
“I believe John Frost is
the best programming strategist around today, and his track record over
the past few years bears that out unequivocally. I'm delighted to
partner with John officially in this effort.”
“It is a privilege for me to partner with
Joe Battaglia, one of the pioneers of Christian music radio, in creating
this new company. Joe has a unique ability to connect people and build
ministry partnerships in ways that can transform their effectiveness.”
Both Battaglia and Frost
will continue with their respective companies, Battaglia with
Renaissance and Frost
with Alan Mason of Goodratings in working
with dozens of the nation’s leading Christian music stations. (3/5)

 In
the face of a struggling economy, KVTT/Dallas (91.7 The Truth), a
33-year 100,000 watt Dallas based non-profit Christian radio station
ministry serving the Metroplex, recently appealed to its listening
audience with its’ own financial emergency. The staff at 91.7 suspended
its’ normal programming for a full day on February 19 and hit the air
waves to seek donations to reach a $200,000 mortgage payment that was
due by the end of the month! Over $100,000 was raised in just 13
hours. And in the eleventh hour, on February 27, after several hundred
credit card donations, checks and cash contributions were tallied, the
station reached its goal and met the $200,000 shortfall. “We know that
God’s economy supersedes that of the nation’s economic perspective. God
showed Himself to be faithful to this station as we broadcast the Gospel
message.” said Doug Price, General Manager of 91.7 The Truth. (3/5)

Visalia/Fresno’s
Shannon Steele has kicked off a weeklong challenge to raise
awareness for Compassion International’s Global Food Crisis Day on
March 11th. She’ll be living on $2 a day for food…and
the kindness of strangers. Listeners are being asked to get
involved in the challenge by praying for the Global Food Crisis Day
and taking action to give. Steele says this week is meant to remind
us how blessed we are and how easy it is to give: “ I’ve come to
terms with how hard I had to work to ONLY spend $14 on food for this
next week, while millions around this world have less than that to
survive on for a month! And it’s amazing to realize that the same
$14 I’ve spent on food for the week can feed one child in a poverty

 Compassion
International and nearly 1,000 Christian radio stations will
dedicate one day of broadcast on March 11, 2009, to help children around
the world who have been affected by The Global Food Crisis. “I have been
fighting poverty for more than 30 years,” said Wess Stafford, president
and CEO of Compassion International. “Throughout that time I have never
seen the potential for devastation that I see in the current Global Food
Crisis.” While the United States continues to reel from the
stock market’s
plunge and the credit crisis, there are severe worldwide consequences to
America’s economic woes that have been almost entirely ignored by the
media. Compassion International is calling on Christian radio and
ministry broadcasters to join in a global effort to set aside one
broadcast day in 2009, March 11th, Global Food Crisis Day, to
bring awareness to this urgent need.
“I am so excited that
STAR 99.1 is part of eliminating the face of hunger in the world,” said
Johnny Stone, program director and morning show host at WAWZ Star 99.1
which covers the New York City and New Jersey markets. “Nothing of this
magnitude has ever been done before.”
“Average food prices
around the world between 2006 and 2008 have risen at staggering levels”
said Mark Hanlon, Sr. Vice President for Compassion International’s USA
Group. “Rice during this time rose by 217%, wheat by 136%, maize by 125%
and soybeans by 107%. While most of us here in America will commit to
cutting coupons to offset costs, the poor will cut meals. These
increases mean more than a tightening of the belt. It can literally
affect their very survival.”
Compassion is
uniquely positioned to provide immediate relief by transferring funds
through their existing infrastructure and ensuring that those that need
help most are helped first. Radio stations interested in participating
on March 11th can go to:

 WMIT/Black
Mountain (106.9 the Light) will be hosting an on-air fundraiser
Tuesday 2/24 to help reach
Russia with
Christian programming. They will be seeking to assist Trans World Radio
(TWR), a global Christian radio network, in raising funds to upgrade a
transmitter that will be able to carry an AM signal from
Estonia
into neighboring
Russia, including the
metropolitan areas of
Moscow and
St. Petersburg.
Russia is no longer
permitting TWR to broadcast its program from stations inside the
country, the ministry is hoping nonetheless to provide a clear signal
there through a Christian station owned by Tartu Family Radio in
neighboring
Estonia. “This
fundraiser represents an urgent need for the Gospel to be proclaimed in
countries where it is being suppressed,” said Jim Kirkland, executive
director for 106.9 the Light. “We have seen time and again how our
listeners have responded in the face of such adversity, and we
anticipate God will do powerful things again on Tuesday. Each penny
represents a potential soul reached with the good news of God’s love.”
In September
2001, Blue Ridge Broadcasting donated to the same station a 50-kilowatt
AM transmitter, which was subsequently upgraded to a 100-kilowatt AM
transmitter. This transmitter now needs to be upgraded to a 200-kilowatt
transmitter, to cut through the static and “electrical smog” in the
major Russian cities. (2/23)
 Keith
Leitch, President of KORB/Santa Rosa, CA (Broken FM) checks in
with HisAir.Net. Keith says the new station went on the air
January 15 with a CHR/Rock format. "We actually applied for and acquired
the five FM translators in advance of acquiring a main station. Our main
station in Hopland, California, was acquired from Educational Media
Foundation (KLOVE). We traded three permits in Juneau, Alaska, for the
one permit in Hopland." While waiting for a main station, they were
able to rebroadcast other Christian stations on their translators. The
FCC granted the move of Hopland 88.7 to the Hopland Baptist Church on
December 31st, 2008. This enabled them to sign the station on January
15, 2009. Keith adds, "immediately afterwards, Santa Rosa Christian
School invited us to move the station to their campus at the Wells Fargo
Center in Santa Rosa. On February 13, 2009, the FCC granted a main
studio waiver to locate the main studio of KORB at SRCS. The studio for
KORB is just a few feet away from where the original KLOVE studio
started." Broken FM covers about 300,000 people in the Northern San
Francisco Bay area and 100,000 people in the Monterey peninsula
area. Audio stream is available on their website:

 An
unknown person hacked into WHLP/Valparaiso, IN (Calvary Radio
Network) Internet-based phone system and used it to make more than 1,900
calls fishing for credit card information. station Manager James
Motshagen learned the business's phone number was being misused when
someone called the station around 10 p.m. Tuesday to ask why the number
was on his caller ID. Motshagen immediately knew which phone
extension was vulnerable and stopped the leak. With a background in
information technology, he was able to determine when the security
system likely was compromised and for how long, during the two days the
hackers had access. Recipients of the calls heard a recorded
message saying their credit card had been compromised and asking them to
enter their card number and expiration date, according to the police

 The
doors for ministry are quietly closing over Russia. Missionary visas for
many evangelical ministries working in Russia are not being
renewed. Even Trans World Radio's (TWR) licenses to broadcast in
Russia are being denied and last year TWR lost over 700 radio stations
broadcasting across 13 time zones. But when God closes one door, He
opens another. From Tartu Estonia, TWR will be partnering with Tartu
Family Radio to upgrade their 100 kw AM transmitter to 200 kw giving TWR
the ability to reach Moscow, St Petersburg and Kiev with a grade A
signal.
This
$409k endeavor will increase TWR’s current potential audience from 50
million to a potential audience of 159 million. Kicking off the
campaign is WMIT/Black Mountain (106.9 The Light). On February 24th,
WMIT will dedicate an entire day to shout from the mountaintops what God
is doing in Estonia and Russia.
If your station would
like to join in partnering with TWR so that Russians will have the
opportunity to hear about Jesus, contact John Summerville, TWR Director

 SoundExchange
and the NAB reached a comprehensive agreement on Internet
streaming rates for local radio stations that simulcast programming over
the Internet or that create new stand-alone Internet stations. The
agreement provides discounts on previously-set rates for 2009 and 2010
and establishes rates for 2011-2015, providing stations with an enhanced
ability to serve listeners through online platforms. Additionally, NAB
has reached separate agreements with individual record label groups that
waive certain statutory format restrictions allowing, for example,
certain artists to be played more often during a four hour period.
The agreement was reached under the authority of the Webcaster
Settlement Act of 2008 (H.R. 7080) and covers simulcasts over the
Internet of all copyrighted commercially-released musical performances.
"Because of the explosive growth of music on the Internet, this is
good news for everyone involved in music - from artists to labels to
broadcasters and to fans," said John Simson, Executive Director of
SoundExchange. "It provides radio stations more opportunity to grow
their on-line businesses in a stable business environment. Furthermore,
it gives artists and copyright holders the opportunity to have more of
their music played, while being fairly compensated, in more places as
radio services expand their offerings on the Internet."
"Today's announcement provides local radio stations with the ability
to enhance their local service with an online component, boosting
listeners' access to music, local news and information," said NAB
Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton. "By ensuring the continued
viability of Internet streaming for America's radio stations, today's
agreement further strengthens the relationship between free, local radio
and our 235 million weekly listeners."
Under the agreement, rates for simulcasts or web channels operated
by local radio stations are reduced in 2009 and 2010 by approximately 16
percent, then gradually increase through 2015 - from $0.0015 per
streamed sound recording in 2009 to $0.0025 per stream by 2015.
By entering this agreement, SoundExchange and the NAB provide
business certainty for broadcasters, artists and copyright holders as
they explore and invest in the new possibilities the Internet provides
to bring music to its many fans. (2/16)
 "The
fairness doctrine has a tremendous potential for constraining free
speech, but hate crimes (legislation) has the potential of
criminalizing it," said NRB
President Frank Wright at the convention that wrapped up last
week in Nashville.
"In the short run, the fairness
doctrine has the immediate threat of being applied to Christian
broadcasters and to the church in a very deleterious way. Hate
crimes legislation, if that is enacted, will evolve over time and
bleed over into speech and have a negative effect, but not right
away. The fairness doctrine will have a negative impact the day it
is implemented." He said he
expects religious broadcasters, largely Christian, to be
particularly hard hit because of the doctrine's requirement for
so-called "balance." If an opposing view must be found for every
matter of controversy, Christian broadcasters could find themselves
in the unenviable and untenable position of seeking out other
religious viewpoints – Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist or atheist – to
counter what ministers of the Gospel say on the air.
"And we
have a personal concern," according to Wright. "The only radio station
that ever lost its license under the fairness doctrine regime was a
Christian radio station in Red Lion, Pa. We are only responding now to
the statements the Democrats themselves are making." The NRB
represents 1,400 organizations, including large ministries and
TV
and radio stations, is "girding itself for a major battle over
broadcasting freedoms," and is prepared to go to court, lobby Congress,
or take its message to the public. "We have talked before about
many of these issues, but now, with the shift in the political
landscape, I think these same things have a much higher probability of
being enacted or at least having legislation and
hearings
and debates, and on the regulation side at the FCC," said Wright.

 At
the National Religious Broadcasters convention last week in
Nashville, NRB senior vice
president and general counsel, Craig Parshall, said
The public is more skeptical of
institutions and closely scrutinizes where they're putting their
money in these sour economic times. "When you look at Madoff, the Wall Street situation and even
Grassley, we're well aware we have to be called to a higher standard
of accountability," Parshall said. "The average family is
struggling. They have to choose whether to keep donating or not.
They're going to want to see transparency."
Last year,
Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, a ranking member on the Senate
Finance Committee, investigated six Christian broadcast ministries to
find out if they were misusing their money or abusing their nonprofit
status.
The targeted ministries, which are not NRB
members, have denied wrongdoing and some have turned over financial
information. The investigation hasn't yet been completed.
The NRB has 1,400 members and meets every Feb in Nashville.
KSBJ/Houston
GM Tim McDermott, said the nonprofit station is audited annually by an
outside firm. "Transparency is important because the people that are
giving to us, they need to have the access to know their money is being
spent wisely," McDermott said. (2/13)
 The
president of HCJB Global,
Wayne Pederson,
says the radio
ministry now has an estimated seven million mostly-Muslim listeners
in North Africa and the Middle East. Pederson says the Arab world is
full of "lost people who need Jesus, and they're getting tired of a
message of hate and are looking for a message of love." He says that
through
HCJB radio
broadcasts, the gospel is penetrating Muslim societies -- so much
that entire households, and in some cases entire villages, are
converting to Christianity. "When Jesus came, He didn't just preach.
He healed. And so we want to do both -- preach on the radio and heal
through our healthcare. People in that part of the world are coming
to Christ as households, as communities. Entire villages are coming
to Christ together," he notes. Pederson joined HJCB in
Nov. 2008 as was previously VP at Moody broadcasting. (2/13)

 The
financial crisis is not stopping Christian radio operators from
moving forward. Mike Wilson, general manager of WCVK/Bowling
Green, plans to build three new radio stations at $50,000 each.
The nonprofit station is developing a capital campaign to raise
money for the project. “It’s probably a seven-, eight-month process
of developing a major gifts campaign,” Wilson said. “That is the
longest and most difficult part.” Still, Wilson hopes to start
construction at the end of this year. WCVK operates two
stations, one in Bowling Green and one in Owensboro.
Wilson decided to construct three new stations after receiving
several requests from listeners who wanted a station in their
community. When the FCC opened a 30-day window to apply for
broadcast station permits, Wilson jumped at the chance to reach out
to those people. “We’re looking to do what we can do and broaden our
reach,” he said. “Any organization’s goal is to change lives for the
better.”
Wilson hopes to raise $200,000 to cover the stations’ construction
and operating expenses. In fact, each station’s expenses depend on
listener and business donations, which have poured in despite the
economy. This past December was “the best December we ever had,”
Wilson said. Before Thanksgiving, the station was $3,000 under
budget. After Wilson shared the station’s plight with donors, the
money flooded in. The station collected about $24,000 during
December.
“One thing I’ve come to realize, even in the downturn of the
economy, people who have the capacity still give, and philanthropy
has gone up every year,” he said. “Especially people of means, they
see it as a responsibility for them because they have been blessed
with wealth.” (1/28)

 The
American Family Radio (AFR) network recently revamped the
format on a majority of its stations to focus more on news and
informational programming.
The switch from a music-driven format to the new "AFR
Talk" lineup made its debut earlier this month. Tim Wildmon,
president of American
Family Radio, says there was a need
for more Christian-based news and information. "With our apologies
to music fans, you can get music in many different places," he
notes. "You can get music on the Internet, you can get music on CDs,
but you can't get this kind of news and information that we're going
to be offering live daily." Wildmon expects the new format to be a
valuable tool for concerned Christians as the new Obama
administration takes hold in Washington. We
anticipate some major public policy debates with the Obama
administration. I'm sure he's going to do a lot of things right," he
concludes. "But on matters of family policy, morality, and life
issues, [the American Family Association] anticipates some very
difficult fights with the Obama administration -- and we need the
troops to be educated and informed, and then to act when the time
comes." (1/26)

produced audio for network promos, and wrote sponsorship and
promotional material. Thomas previously worked as production
director and morning show host for WGCF/Paducah, KY, WDXR/Paducah,

 United
Christian Broadcasters (UCB) has announced it is just weeks away
from broadcasting Christian radio on DAB digital radio in Northern
Ireland. Following a successful fundraising campaign, the charity
expects to begin broadcasting in Northern Ireland on 30
January. “This is a pretty incredible time for UCB”, said Gary
Hoogvliet, UCB’s Director of Broadcasting. “On a weekly basis, we
receive hundreds of e-mails from people letting us know how much
they’re being encouraged and stretched by what they hear on UCB and
it’s great that in troubling times, we’re able to point people to a
greater hope. “We’re looking forward to broadcasting in Northern
Ireland too. We know many people have waited for this for a long
time, so we’re excited that this is finally becoming a reality.”
UCB already broadcasts on DAB digital radio to most major cities in
England and Wales and after Northern Ireland, hopes to continue to
expand coverage across the UK. (1/20)

Tyler’s Dash for Health is an 8 week initiative where listeners are
invited to join either Team Ellis or Team Tyler through the
station’s website.
“We feel this is an amazing opportunity to join with the community
to learn how to make healthier lifestyle changes a priority in
2009,” said Tyler McKenzie of the Z88.3 Morning Show. “I’ve had the
desire, but not the tools to do this for a long time,” added Ellis
B. Feaster, “And it’s so exciting to see the response we’ve been
receiving.” (1/15)
 WAWZ/New
York (STAR 99.1) presents an option to all of the bad news you keep
hearing on the economy, etc..
When you lose hope in the world, where do you turn? At least 7,000
people will be turning to their faith and their belief in God at the
Prudential Center on January 23rd, 2009. Chris Tomlin is
bringing his “Hello Love” tour to Newark, NJ to perform songs about that
“thing” that so many people are looking for.
The concert is taking place in Newark, NJ,
the site of racial riots in the 1960’s. Contemporary Christian,
Caucasian artist Chris Tomlin will be taking the stage with Gospel,
African American artist Israel Houghton that evening celebrating the
great strides we can make together in racial relations by coming
together to worship. (1/15)
 KTSY/Boise
listeners rang in the New Year as over 600 people got together to ring
in 2009 at KTSY's first ever New Year's Eve Party. Highlights of the
night included laser-tag, mini-golf, go-karts, video games and live
music. The best part of all, however, was that the party was for a great
cause. Those who brought food for the local Boise Rescue Mission
received additional tokens good for many of the attractions during the
night. Almost 400 pounds of food was collected, much of it brought
children and teenagers. The night ended with a live countdown and
celebration complete with party favors and a balloon drop at midnight.

 Listeners
across the
U.S.
gave nearly $370,000 to “WAY-2-Give,” the first-ever national
fundraising campaign for WAY-FM Media Group, which included
targeted direct mail plus a two day on-air fundraising event on
almost all of its stations. “We needed to try something new this
year, so we put together a unique and integrated campaign combining
direct mail and online giving with a national fundraising
opportunity,” explains Senior Vice President
Dusty Rhodes.
“Considering how everyone is feeling the affects of this economy,
WAY-FM is deeply grateful to its donors for helping us at this
time.” On-air messaging for “WAY-2-Give” was unique in that it asked
listeners to stand in the gap for other donors who had to curtail
donations to the ministry because of the declining economy. Brant
Hansen, Donna Cruz, Jeff Connell along with Wally of
Total Axxess served as the main air talents for this two day event.
Denver’s
WAY-FM conducted its own separate event a week earlier, contributing
to the overall total raised. (1/8)

 New
station CKJJ/Bancroft
is on the air running final tests at 103.5 and will re-broadcast United
Christian Broadcasters (UCB). UCB is a worldwide network of radio
stations that originated in Auckland, New Zealand, and has expanded its
broadcast range to 27 nations. It came it Canada in 2003, and Belleville
was its first stop, says GM Garry Quinn. “Technically, we are an
adult contemporary station, our target audience, falling between the
ages of 24 to 55,” says Quinn.
“In the
United States, there are approximately 1,500 Christian-based radio
stations. In Canada, there are about 50,” says Quinn. So if we were to
take the 10:1 ratio, (the population ration between the two nations)
there is a lot of growth potential. But, then again, Christian radio
stations have only been allowed in this country since 1994.” (1/7)

announced it's Project: JOY for January, a free trip for a JOY-FM

such an overwhelming response, the support drive continued and
sponsored over 400 children that day. The stations' annual mission

 American
Family Radio (AFR) has launched a new AFR Talk format flipping a
number of it's current AC and CHR music stations to the new format.
According to AFR President Tim Wildmon,
“American Family Radio is
making a change in format for many of our stations beginning with the
New Year. We are introducing AFR Talk. This format will feature a mix of
excellent live talk radio programs as well as some of the very best
Bible teaching programs available. This change in format is in keeping
with our mission of getting truthful information out to the Christian
community so we can be the salt and light that Jesus commands his
followers to be. We realize some of our listeners are going to miss the
music they have become accustomed to hearing. However, we think it is in
the overall best interest of our ministry to change to this new
news/talk/teaching format." Michael Reagan recently joined the AFR talk
line-up. (1/2)
