Special
awards given out at GMA Week in Nashville this week include: The Scott
Campbell Radio Award honoring outstanding efforts and contributions in
broadcasting. This year’s honoree is EMF Broadcasting’s Alan Mason.
Mason has been an active contributor to the Christian music industry
since his career began nearly forty years ago. From his humble
beginnings at a small daytime radio station in Vancouver, Wash., that
featured religious talk and underground rock, to his current role as
Director of Research at EMF Broadcasting, Mason has been impacting the
world of Christian broadcasting nationwide. Mason’s impact on Christian
radio includes top rated KCMS in Seattle, a station that has achieved
top tier rankings in one of the most unchurched areas of the country.
His involvement in the initial research project for WAY-FM was a
catalyst for the company’s growth to more than 400,000 listeners and
nine owned and operated radio stations. Mason’s expertise was
instrumental in helping WGTS in Washington, D.C. to grow to one of the
most listened to Christian stations in America, strategically positioned
in the nation’s capital to help influence the entire globe. Now with his
current work as Director of Research for EMF, Alan is in a key position
to monitor trends, develop strategies, and influence a company that is a
major player in the industry.
The Rob Gregory Award is given for major
contributions made to the community through the medium of radio. This
year’s honoree is Allen Henderson of HIS Radio. Henderson began
his career in broadcasting 35 years ago. Obtaining a degree in theology
and as an ordained minister, Henderson fulfills his life-long passion
for ministry through broadcasting. He also is involved in local church
ministry leading worship and speaking. Henderson has been with HIS Radio
since the beginning 24 years ago, and became General Manager in 1990.
During his tenure, HIS Radio has expanded to over 30 frequencies across
the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama. A major goal of Henderson’s has
always been to reach out to local communities and make a difference for
Christ by serving on various boards and advisory councils. Allen
encourages the next generation of Christian broadcasters by serving as
an Adjunct Professor in the Communications Department of North
Greenville University. (4/24)

grade signal into Muskogee, OK. (southeast of Tulsa) and that the
station will be programmed specifically for that community. KXOJ
Muskogee features much of the same AC artists heard on KXOJ/Tulsa as
well as personalities Craig West

(10am-3pm) and Dave Gordon during afternoon drive (3pm-7pm).
Personalities will focus on events and lifestyle stories specifically
for Muskogee listeners.
Adonai has owned and
operated 100.3FM as a different format for several years. "We are
constantly looking for ways to extend the KXOJ brand while serving the
local community,” stated KXOJ General Manager David Stephens.
“KXOJ Muskogee 100.3FM serves both of these purposes."

In
an effort to inspire his listeners to exercise and eat healthy, Fish
jock WFSH/Atlanta PD/ morning personality Kevin Avery is
running a 10K a day for the month of January for their "Get Fit with the
Fish" Promotion. From 5:30am to 6:20am, he's running 6.2 miles on a
treadmill in the studio during "Kevin & Taylor in the Morning"! Avery
was inspired by "The Ultra Marathon Man" Dean Karnazes who ran 50
marathons in 50 states in 50 days. Kevin's goal is impressive for
someone in a sedentary profession like radio. Avery said, "I figure if a
40 year old radio guy like me can get up and run every morning, our
listeners can get out there and take a brisk walk or do something to
improve their health. We're really trying to encourage our listeners to
have a better quality of life - to be able to feel good and play with
their kids." According to co-host Taylor Scott, "Kevin is just the
guy to do a 10K every day. Once he sets his mind to something, there's
no stopping him. Three years ago he started walking on a treadmill to
get back in shape when we first did 'Get Fit with the Fish' and then
last July, he ran his first marathon. Of course, he picked one of the
hardest (San Francisco) with all those hills! Kevin loves a challenge."

that it has acquired WITH/Baltimore (AM 1230) from Salem
Communications Corporation. The station will operate under the call
letters WRBS (AM 1230). Tom Bisset, president, noted, “Acquiring WITH-AM
continues our unwavering commitment to bringing the Good News of the
Gospel to our community. We’re pleased to continue serving the
spiritual needs of our community through WRBS-FM and River Valley Ranch
(youth camp ministry) and, now, through the new WRBS-AM.” Steve Lawhon,
vice-president, commented, “This acquisition allows us to better serve
the needs and wants of our community. The format will feature Bible
teaching from leading evangelical speakers and other Christian
programming. We intend it to be another voice of quality programming
that, above all, speaks to the heart.” (1/3)
KLFF/San
Luis Obispo transmitter update: Upon receiving manufacturers’ bids,
the cost for the replacement project for purchase and installation came
in at $60,000, and at the time, K-LIFE had less than $30,000 in its
equipment fund. Immediately, donations of all sizes began to come in
from listeners and churches, and even from another radio station outside
the area. By Christmas Eve morning, $45,000 had been raised.
Then an anonymous donor dropped off $5,000 cash to the station.
And, on Christmas Day, a $7,000 donation was hand-delivered to Board
member. For the next week, donations continued to arrive online, over
the phone, in the mail and in-person at the K-LIFE studios. By
December 31, the full $60,000 had been raised.
On Saturday, December 9, the
K-LIFE transmitter was hit by a power surge during a storm. The
station was knocked off the air and the transmitter was destroyed.
In the meantime, a loaner transmitter has kept the station on the air at
25% power.
In a statement to transmitter
project donors today, K-LIFE Executive Director Jon Fugler wrote, “You
have been part of one of the most amazing things we have ever seen God
do at K-LIFE. This was an easy task for God, and as I sit here
now, just after the first of the year, I can tell you that the need has
been fully met!”
K-LIFE plans to order a
digital-ready transmitter this week to prepare for HD conversion and
installation is expected to take place in February. (1/2)
