Jon's
Career Capsule
I have been in radio 37 years, doing mornings and
programming and being involved in music most of my career. I hosted
“Powerline” for the Southern Baptist Convention for 34 years and
have hosted and produced “20 The Countdown Magazine” for 25 years.
My
lovely Bride Sherry and I host the Morning Show on “The KLOVE Radio
Network” daily from our Ranch in North Texas where we live with our
five year old daughter Lexi who came into our lives from China four
years ago. We have a menagerie of animals, including Lippitt Morgan
Horses, Camels, Burrows, a llama, a Peacock, Guineas, Chickens, two
large Dogs, a Cat, and whatever wanders in.
1.
How has 20 The Countdown Magazine evolved over the last few years?
We are always
looking for new features and interesting ideas that we can implement
as we discover them. We must never “rest”.
2. What do you attribute the shows great success and longevity to?
I feel that the
show has been consistent with a high level of production value and a
compelling presentation with specials sprinkled in along the way.
3.
How is it to wake up and do a morning show from your home?
Wonderful!
Inspiring! Great view! Although, we have never ever had a
“sick day”. When the studio is 100 feet away you just find some way
to drag yourself out there instead of waking someone in California
up at 2AM to fill in for us!
4. How do you draw the line on content for your show….?
We provide
content that we believe will be interesting, compelling and
appropriate for our audience. We meet every day to review and plan.
5. What kind of promotions work best for Jon & Sherry?
Promotions
involving our listeners.
6. How do you think Christian Record labels can better serve
Christian radio?
With actual CD’s
well labeled on the CD AND the cover! Downloading from the
internet has to be by its very nature inconsistent.
7. In your opinion what are the biggest obstacles facing Christian
radio today?
The many ways
the audience has access to music and entertainment. I pods, etc.
8.
What do you believe is the primary role of the Christian radio air
personality?
To make a
compelling presentation of the Gospel through music and concise,
entertaining talk with the audience. It is always good to remember
that it is not about you!
9.
What (if any) Christian radio stations do you consider as innovators
today?
Actually,
knowing what I know from the inside, KLOVE and EMF Broadcasting. No
one puts more research and real thinking into what they do.
10. Where do you see Christian radio in 5 years?
No one knows!
The “thinkers” and “doers” will decide.
