Randi's Career
Capsule
Who would of
thought a girl who enjoyed Art, Psychology and Law would of
ended up in “Radio” but then again how could I forget the
countless hours of sitting by my Radio at home, studying my
favorite artists, Lyrics to my favorite songs, poetry, writing
and using “Music” as my Anchor. Music was one of the most
significant, positive ways for me to discover, dream, create,
imagine and focus on my Passions…..the tunes were always there,
following me along, cheering me on…..
It wasn’t until my early 20’s that I got to a place of feeling
“Alone and Scared”…… I had to face the Reality that “I didn’t
have a clue” what I wanted to do for the Rest of my Life. This
Realization made me feel weak. I turned to Music and Running as
an outlet to help me along…..seeking and praying…. God Led
me back to “Square 1”—Simplicity. What comes to your mind right
away without anyone telling you what to do? My answer…. “Music
and God”
That Answer brought
me to my first Radio Job ever! WBCL Radio Network in Fort Wayne,
Indiana—they called me in for my first Interview, made my first
Air-Check and they liked my motivation and energy. I do re-call
my first day “On-Air”….I was so nervous that I talked too fast,
sounded like a cheerleader! Surprisingly, they loved it! Worked
more than any other part-timer for several years on the airwaves
and felt called to pursue something “outside of my comfort zone”
…Anyone that knows me well, knows I like a Challenge. I had a
Passion to help the Youth….so, moved to Texas to do “just that”.
Became a counselor of troubled teens and God revealed some of
the most Incredible powers of the Holy Spirit. When you Answer
“The Call”…..God shows up with Flying Colors!
It was ONE call after another when moving to Texas and the Last
call landed me at KSBJ and has been my “Home” for the past 7
years. Thank God for “The Calling”…..and Most importantly, Thank
God Almighty….. I Answered!
1.
Tell us about how you became a part of KSBJ?
My first Radio Break in Houston was
at KKHT, 1070 the Word. I was able to produce 2 live shows every
weekend and did some on-air reporting the weather, songs and
underwriters. KKHT was Christian Talk Radio on the AM dial and
was a wonderful experience of trouble-shooting, working under
pressure and the challenge of going LIVE, No take Backs, No
Second Chances! It was Fun and always something new every
weekend. One of the Mid-day radio announcers tells me “you
remind me of a KSBJ girl” ….that was the first I’d heard of KSBJ.
She told me the dial, 89.3 and I set it in my car that day. I
began to Love KSBJ in Houston from that moment, listening in my
car to songs I knew and could sing along to. God’s Voice Speaks
to me: “Call Them”….. I Listen.
2. Describe your typical day at KSBJ?
No matter what I have going on in my
life, as soon as I walk into the KSBJ studio…everything feels
Right. I like to say “I’m at home with the Lord” ….It’s my solid
ground--“my Rock”….that God has blessed me with, brought me to a
place of Peace and Joy! Nothing compares to “The Calling”…When
you know, you know…..No questions asked…You follow his Voice,
“The Voice of God” My typical day at KSBJ is Fun and Meaningful!
It’s like having a party with the Lord and his children singing
along to songs that speak Volumes about our Savior, Jesus! About
each other’s battles, trials, obstacles, that all bring us to
the Cross and closer to our Heavenly Father. Talking to callers,
praying with the listeners about all walks of life, battles they
are facing. It’s Magical watching, listening and waiting on the
Lord to Move and Bless people’s lives!!
3. How do you prepare yourself to do an overnight radio show?
You may be wondering how a person
can “stay up all night” ….It’s not easy, but easy isn’t why I’m
here! Sometimes I take a short nap before going into work and
that helps give me an extra Lift. I usually have to plan my
sleep time a week in advance because I know what’s ahead for the
weekend. This helps a Great deal. Then—of-course, Starbucks is
my “middle name”….skinny vanilla latte please…..but that’s all I
need. God covers the Rest, Gives me strength that I don’t even
understand.
4. How do you keep yourself motivated to stay awake all night?
Motivation to stay “Awake” all night
comes from within. I like to think back to a time in my life
where I felt Alone and Scared of the “unknown world” and how I
fit into that “pattern”….the “fast Paced” World I barely knew.
I’m very competitive natured within myself and stir for answers
of the unknown world before me: “Hoping and Dreaming to be the
Best Instrument for the Lord” I remember feeling Alone and
Scared, not knowing my place in this “equation” I prayed and
listened every Night to a young lady on the Radio “late at
night”….speaking about God, Life, Miracles, Destiny and Passion.
It gave me Peace…..and some how knew God had an Amazing Plan
that I wouldn’t completely understand until much later…..Now,
here I am….shining that light to others…………When I close my eyes
before a late night shift at KSBJ, I remember when I felt “Alone
and Scared” and the Moment “I Let GO” and gave that over to the
Lord…….From that moment, My life began to make some drastic
changes that I knew would all make sense “ONE Day” I think of
that ONE person that feels Alone, that needs the light of God’s
Love to shine down, Guiding them through the dark days and
lighting a fire in their soul that keeps them going and walking,
side by side with the Lord. That’s enough for me, gives me
strength, courage and motivation to keep fighting for God’s
children.
5. Where do you think Christian stations should look to find new
talent?
New Talent are found in some of the
most “unknown Places” Sometimes I believe that some of the most
gifted are never discovered for reasons of Circumstances—But to
find these “Gifted Talents”…..you must Pray and Look Beyond the
surface…..Pay attention to the “reason” people are gifted,
talented, comes from God, and some of the New Talents aren’t
even sure of what they can do until God opens a door and
provides a mentor, an Opportunity! Online is a great resource in
informing and providing some new talent with their first “BIG
Break” in radio. Given the Right atmosphere that allows a
Personality to shine is the key to discover a hidden Gem or
unlock a hidden door.
6. Why do you think so many stations do not have a LIVE
overnight personality?
A LIVE overnight personality is not
a “high demand” Position according to the business angle or
majority of people “Awake” during those times. Therefore, not
seeing this as a crucial time to “Go LIVE”
7. What are the benefits for a station having a LIVE overnight
personality on the air?
But having an Overnight LIVE Voice
on the air speaks Volumes for God and the people who are
hurting, can’t sleep, need hope in the night….some of the most
powerful testing of the spirit happens at Night when people have
time to actually think about their life, troubles and worries.
It’s also the most crucial time in Reaching and Reminding those
people “they are not alone”…..God is there and so is a LIVE
Voice in the late night to help them feel connected to
something, God moves Dramatically during these times……WOW!
8. How does KSBJ support you as an air personality ?
KSBJ provides regular air-checks,
training, encouragement, mentors and most importantly “LOVE”
9. What (if any) Christian radio stations do you consider as
innovators today?
I like to See Christian Radio
Stations being ….. “Fearless” But Grounded!
10. Where do you see Randi Lynn in 5 years?
In 5 years from Now….I hope and pray
with my very existence that…………”I’m answering the CALL” God’s
calling with everything I have!
