As we come to
the end of another year and look forward to the next, successful
stations consider the areas in which they desire to be different a
year from now. All improvements are a result of change and that
can be difficult for some. In their book “Switch: How to Change
Things When Change is Hard”, Chip and Dan Heath state,
“Change brings new choices that create uncertainty. Think of how in
an unfamiliar place you gravitate toward a familiar face. Decision
paralysis can be deadly for change because the most familiar place
is always the status quo.”
While it can be daunting looking up the mountain to a place you’ve
not yet been, it can seem easier to envision looking down the
mountain to see from where you’ve come.
For that reason imagine that it is now the end of 2012 and you’ve
looking back at the things your station has accomplished during the
year. What do you see? Were there local events that impacted your
community? Was there an addition to your staff that gave you needed
experience? Were there tools and resources added that made your
people more productive? What did you begin to focus on more so
that you could be more effective? What did you take away so that
you’d be less distracted? What reminders helped you focused your
busyness on making your station better right at that moment?
Every journey begins with a single step. Determining what you want
to see a year from now when you look back down the mountain can be a
helpful first step in heading in the right direction.
